God Never Changes

some thoughts started rumbling around in my head during our church's worship time this morning, then it was confirmed a couple times during the message as well: Our circumstances don't change who God is.

As an example from my own limited life experience, our firstborn son died as a baby. The good and loving God who blessed us with a beautiful and healthy newborn was still the same God a week later when we put him in the ground. Still good. Still loving. It was a painful time for us to walk through, but God was still God. No matter what your circumstances are: whether you have a job, or not. Whether you have money... or not. Whether you have good health... or not. God won't change. Ever. That's who He is. And that's good news.

Holiday musings

~ Anybody else think that this year's Halloween decorations were more ghoulish and gruesome than usual? Or is it just my neighborhood? And if they were worse this year, is it recession-related? Hmmmm.

~ I'm actually on the ball and thinking ahead to Christmas plans and preparations and presents and traditions.... And yet I was still taken aback when I was driving to church on November 1st and a commercial came on the radio with a woman brightly announcing "It's the holidays and you'll want to ...... (blahblahblah buy our product)".

The Cheer-Up Hug

I've stumbled on a new technique for our homeschool. My older two boys were each practicing a difficult new concept in math - double digit subtraction for one and multiplication for the other. And there was much weeping and gnashing of teeth. I noticed that they both kept stopping and going over to talk to their beloved little sister. So I instituted the "cheer-up hug". I told them they needed to solve 5 math problems and then they could give Georgia a hug, do 5 more, get another hug, etc. So far it seems to be working quite well! If you're down in the dumps, wouldn't you like a hug from this little cutie?

Easy Rice and Beans

This is our favorite go-to meal:

Cook 1 cup rice (any kind - white, brown)

When done cooking, stir in 1 jar salsa

and 1 can beans (we like black, but pinto or kidney work too; or sub 2 cups cooked from dry)

Serve in bowls topped with shredded Cheddar and

tortilla chips on the side (we use them instead of spoons)

A Weekend on Long Island

We left home Wednesday morning at 4:30am and stopped off in the Poconos for a 2-hour visit with dh's grandmother, dad, and stepmom before continuing on our way and getting to my sister's house a little after 5pm
Had fun getting cousins together
Watched 16 month old twins play
Too chilly for swimming but we went to the beach anyway
Sorted out bins of clothing
Hubby got put to work fixing things around the house
Got to practice our German
Celebrated my mother's 70th birthday with a nice dinner out
Left for home 8am Saturday morning, but 10 minutes later the van broke down. Eventually it got (mostly) fixed and we left about 4pm, getting us home at 2:30am Sunday
