  • Week 6 - Painting

The boys are listening to "Summer" by Vivaldi and using watercolors to paint a summer scene.

This is one reason why I really like using a preplanned curriculum, because I would probably never do this on my own. Children painting in the house makes me uptight. (the mess! the cleanup! horrors!) But intellectually I see value in teaching my children art as well as appreciation of classical music. So having it written down on a schedule means I am much more likely to actually do it. I know it's coming ahead of time and can prepare myself for it. And the box-checker in me likes to get each and every little box completed, although I'm not so uptight that I don't eliminate or shuffle the lesson plans as I see fit.

  • Weeks 5-6 : Sukkot

Sukkot is a week-long celebration of the fall harvest.  Leviticus commanded the people to live in "booths" to remind them of the 40 years the Israelites wandered in the desert in temporary homes.

We have a small back porch and turned part of it into our sukkah (booth) by hanging green and camo fabric (to give that nature feeling) for sides, then adding branches and decorating with apples and a pumpkin.  It was an extremely cold and windy week, so I'm very glad that we didn't build a free-standing structure as we were supposed to.
